Southern Emu Wren

Walking from Tip’s Billabong to the planted corridor leading to the river you may be very lucky to see some very small birds flitting  amongst the dense reeds  & shrubs. They are quite elusive ,quick & well camouflaged .I was very lucky and saw amale Southern Emu Wren [Rusty coloured with blue/mauve under the chin ]. A Golden Headed Cisticola  kindly perched near the barbed wire covered fence post where I propped the camera .

Flying overhead were two Black Shouldered Kite, also longtime residents in the area.

Gloomy Octopus   [Octopus tetricus ]

There are many octopus around our rocky shores at the moment.

Cephalopods are reputedly the smartest of all invertebrates . They

are masters of disguise in that they can alter their texture and colour

for camouflage….. and they are colourblind !

Diet                      They feed on crabs & molluscs using their sharp beak.

Habitat                 Octopus are territorial & lairs amongst rocks & rubble

can be recognized by the shell remains in its ‘garden’.

Reproduction :   The male has a modified 3rd arm which it uses to deposit

packets of   sperm under the mantle of the female.

Our next outing will be at Eden on 10th March.

Meet at Aslings  Beach car park [ south end of the cemetery]

Time:   12 Noon for lunch then proceed along the rocks to the old swimming pool
