This year we are again fortunate to have three very talented and experienced photographers who will be judging all your amazing photographs in the competition. Good Luck gentlemen!

here are a few brief details about their photography

Steve Sass

Steve Sass is a Consulting Ecologist who has conducted thousands of biodiversity surveys across Australia since 1992. Spending so much time working with Australia’s unique flora and fauna, Steve has always attempted to photograph the environments that he works in as well as the species he studies, to share with people across Australia and the world to learn and enjoy the ecological diversity of this country. His main interest is bird and reptile photography. His images have featured on many of the threatened species profile websites for government departments and they have graced numerous covers of scientific journals, especially in the last two years where Steve has won no less than five cover photo competitions for various journals. One of Steve’s photography highlights was his winning of the BirdLife Australia photo competition in the Threatened Species Category for his Grey-crowned Babbler image (see attached) in 2012. One of the judges, Stephen Garnett, made these comments “I chose this as the winner because of the tension in the babbler’s body—the picture is at the split second between capture of the grub and departure for the nest. It cannot have been easy to catch—it is not an image likely to have been taken from a hide. Also the bird fills the frame, each part clearly in focus, the tilt of the head balanced by the uplifted tail”.

Steve is also the Lead Fauna Ecologist for the Mimosa Rocks Bioblitz this November so we look forward to him sharing his knowledge with bioblitz participants.
