Great sponge

Chris Nicholls discovered this sponge a few days ago on Main Beach Merimbula. He thinks it may be a Demospongiae but would like a better identification – can anyone help?

It is most likely Clathria cactiformis orechinoclathria leporina ( edgar pgs 136,137) but sponge is too desimated with only skeleton showing to make a reasonable identification

Gee, not sure on this. Is the remaining structure hard and woody? What form is the basal structure? Are we looking at the remnants of a gorgonian?
